SOMANTIC EXPERIENCING
What is Somantic experiencing?
The Somatic ExperiencingR method is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma and other stress disorders. It is the life’s work of Peter A. Levine, PhD, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, psychology, and indigenous healing practices,
together with over 50 years of successful clinical application. The SET° approach releases traumatic shock and restores connection, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental a2achment trauma. It oñers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states.
What to expect?
A Somatic experiencing (SE) session will look different for everyone. We work with what comes up and what you bring in the session – from previous traumatic events, to current challenges or even to simple, daily, small triggers and dis-regulations.
The aim of the sessions is to gently guide you to increase tolerance for diñicult bodily sensations, suppressed emotions and to build capacity for
containment and resilience. No prior experience is required – all is needed is an open mind and a willingness to befriend the body and release stagnant energy from past traumatic experiences.
SE can be used to support healing and reduce symptoms of various conditions including:
- autoimmune
- digestive issues
- PTSD
- anxiety and depression
- fibromyalgia
- eating disorders and a disordered relationship to food and more.
Who and what we treat?
SE is a safe and gentle approach that can be used with everyone including young children as well as adults.
Research
There is a lot of research to support the use of SE in healing trauma. Some examples are:
